Sherman grew up on a farm, graduated from Texas Tech in 1941, taught school for 34 years, worked summers for the US Agriculture Department, served in the Lubbock Redbud Lions Club (including as president for a term), and worked in Sunday School and Training Union at First Baptist in Lubbock, among other churches during his life. He married Frankie Belle Simpson on June 10, 1945 and had two sons, Sherman Eugene and Bobby Frank. He also served as guardian for John Angelo Strappazon.
