W.F. (Ben) Abney, a 60 year resident of Refugio County, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2002. He was born on February 27, 1919 in Gregory, Texas. He was raised on a farm in Gregory graduating from Taft High School in 1936. He attended Texas Christian University on an athletic scholarship, graduating in 1940. He married Dorothy Nelle Pool of Sinton, Texas in 1941. He joined the Air Force, serving in World War II as a B-24 bomber pilot, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. Returning home after the war, he farmed in Refugio and San Patricio Counties until his retirement in 1976. He took an active roll serving on the boards of several gin elevators and farm organizations. He loved children and held several different offices on the Woodsboro ISD Board. Ben was an active leader in the Woodsboro Church of Christ for 50 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Nelle Abney. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Patsy Dowling. He is survived by his son and a daughter-in-law, Frank and Sue Abney of Bayside, Texas; his brother, Herbert T. Abney of Wimberly, Texas; his son-in-law, Dennis Dowling of Baytown, Texas; seven grandchildren, Steven Miller of Corpus Christi, Paul Dowling, Jeannine Southerly, Suzanne and husband, Jerry Cates, Kristina Dowling, all of Baytown, Chad Abney of Lake Jackson, Texas, Lance Abney of Cypress, Texas and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Woodsboro Church of Christ on Friday, October 25, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. Burial to follow at La Rosa Cemetery. Contributor: Robert Abney (48473675) •
