Finis was written in the last chapter in the life of the oldest pioneer in this community with the passing of Einar O. Stromme, 91, on Thursday, October 28.
Hale and hearty until the last few weeks when the effects of old age crept up on him, Mr. Stromme had enjoyed a life free from illness or inactivity in nearly a century of living. As an early pioneer he braved the discomforts and hardships of a raw country to establish a home for himself and his family.
Mr. Stromme was a native of Norway. Born on a farm near Bergen on August 9, 1846, he emigrated to this country at the age of 22. The trip across the Atlantic required seven weeks to make the journey from Bergen to Quebec in a sailboat. July 4, 1868, found him located at Red Wing in Goodhue County, Minnesota. In June 1874, he was united in marriage to Guri Tyssen. Twelve children were born to this union, five of whom died in infancy. The living are: Mrs. Oline Kaastad, Mrs. Haldor J. Stromme, Mrs. Gusta Stephenson, Mrs. Iver Kvamme, Carl O. Stromme, Mrs. Alette Nelson and Mrs. Peter Aalgaard.
Five generations were represented in the Stromme family during the last few years of Mr. Stromme's life. There are 49 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. stromme died in March, 1922. Mr. and Mrs. Stromme resided in Cass County, North Dakota for three years before moving on to Griggs in 1881 to take up a homestead in Greenfield Township. This has been their home until about 3 months ago when Mr. Stromme came to Hannaford to live with his daughter, Mrs. Oline Kaastad.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 31st at the Union Lutheran Church of which he was a charter member. Interment was made in the Union Cemetery. pallbearers were Ernest Stromme, Tom Lenning, Helmer Brudvick, Leif Aalgaard, Clarence Stromme and Algot Aalgaard. Services were conducted by Rev. E. O. Lee.
Music for the services contained a duet by Mrs. C. K. Stromme and Melvin Haugen, a solo by Rev. Lee and another duet by Harry Haugen and Mrs. Harry Schwinger.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Iver Kvamme, Palermo, N. Dak., Mrs. Gusta Stephenson, Northfield, Minnesota, and Mrs. Alette Nelson, Enderlin, N. Dakota.
Published in the Hannaford Enterprise, Hannaford, North Dakota, November 4, 1937.
