The daughter of Charles Westley and Ida Lavender Hays, she was born on February 7, 1905, north of Grinnell. She was a graduate of Grinnell High School in 1923. She graduated from Grinnell College in 1927, where she majored in music and was a pianist in the Grinnell College orchestra. Following her education she taught music in the Traer, Lynnville-Sully, and Grinnell-Newburg school districts.
She married Lehrl Fritz on July 14, 1929. They farmed in the Bethel area, southwest of Grinnell. She moved to the Mayflower Home in 1986.
She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and she was 50-year member of the former Bethel United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and was active in the WSCS. She was also a member of the Grinnell Chapter of the DAR, PEO chapter BM of Grinnell, the Tuesday dub of Grinnell, and helped found the PEO chapter in Valdostra, Ga. Mrs. Fritz was active in the Jasper County Fair and the 4-H. She was formerly director of the Jasper County Women's Chorus and sang in the Bethel Quartet.
She is survived by two sons, Charles of Kellogg and Steven of Marshalltown; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, and her daughter, Joanne Merritt.
