One of the four sons of James H & Betsey Copp Brown, Ira was raised by Betsey's sister, Sarah Copp & her husband, Ira Maxwell Putney, as their son. Ira, Jr. married Azubah Ann Haislett on June 23, 1858 in Henderson County, IL. Their first child, Ira Turton, died at the age of 1 and is buried next to Ira, Sr. and Sarah D Copp Putney at Olena. Ira, Jr. was the postmaster at Olena, Illinois because the post office was located in his general store. He was a Civil War veteran and a Freemason. Ira & Azubah's other children are: Minnie Peterson, Libbie Vie Armstrong, Harry Mc., Gear Maxwell; and Bert Brown Putney who married Mary Florence McIntire.

When he was four years of age his father moved to Bloomington, McLean County, IL. During the residence of the family at this place and at Burlington, IA whither they had moved, Ira passed his time at school, completing high school course of the Burlington school at the age of thirteen. A year later the family moved to Olena, Henderson Co., IL where the father bought the business of Marks & Porter, general merchants. Father and son continued together until Oct., 1861 when the son enlisted at Cairo, in Co. E, 10th Ill. Inf. under Capt. C. F. Cowan. He was mustered out Oct. 1864 at East Point, GA. Returning to Olena, he re-entered business with his father. In 1865 the first of Putney & Son was followed by Putney & Curry, the elder Putney retiring and giving place to George Curry.
