YOUNG, HENRY BARBER
A resident of Zachary, he died Sunday, March 16, 2003, at 3:18 a.m. at Lane Memorial Hospital, Zachary. He was 91, born in Baker and a longtime resident of Zachary. Visitation was at Charlet Funeral Home, Zachary, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. Visitation at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until service at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Interment in the Young Family Cemetery, Zachary. He is survived by his wife, Earla Thompson Young; two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry T. and Ellen Young of Zachary, and David B. and Wilda Young of Greensboro, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, LaMae Young and Tommy Strange of McCellanville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Todd and Chris Young, Michael Strange and Matt and Bess Young; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 13 siblings. He grew up in Baton Rouge and attended Baton Rouge High School, where he was active in basketball, baseball and track. He attended LSU and played on the 1932 national championship basketball team. He was active in refereeing basketball on the high school and college level. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board in 1976, where he was supervisor of transportation and later director of instructional resources. Pallbearers will be Robin Pope, Matt, Chris and Todd Young, Charlie Mac Munson and Martin Woolfolk. He was a member of Zachary United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be given to Zachary United Methodist Church or to a charity of choice.
