Elijah Rownd was born on August 12, 1816 in Worcester County, Maryland to Joshua Rownd (1787-1875) and Hannah (Shockley) Rownd. His parents were also natives of Worcester county and removed from Maryland to Ripley county, Indiana, when Elijah was still a baby. There they engaged in farming and were among the early pioneer settlers of the state of Indiana.
