OREM, Utah - Graveside memorial service for Charla Rice Benson, 72, Orem, Utah, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Highland Cemetery, Lawton.

She died Wednesday, April 14, 2010, in Orem.

She was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Oklahoma City, to Charles Wesley Rice and Joyce Margarite Brown. She loved living on the farm with Grandaddy Ben and Grandmother Vaud Brown before starting school. She also loved riding horses and learning to drive a car on country roads when visiting Grandaddy. She grew up and attended schools in Southwest Oklahoma, graduating from Cache High School in 1956. She graduated from Cameron University with a major in accounting. She married Donn Merrick May 11, 1958, and later divorced. She then married Wilford Eugene Benson on Nov. 10, 1965. He was a career military man and Charla, who was very patriotic, enjoyed all their travel and the many places they lived. After Gene's death, Charla moved to Utah. A Methodist in her early years, Charla joined the LDS Church after marrying Gene. She was active and served in Junior Sunday School, Primary and Relief Society Presidencies, and Cub and Boy Scouts. She was ward organist and chorister, temple worker, and Compassionate Service Leader. "The best calling I ever had, helping people in need." She loved the Gospel. She was employed by the IRS, and retired in 1988, then owned a travel agency for 11 years. Meeting her Rice relatives and reconnecting with her Kiker cousins in 2008 was a highlight of her life.

Survivors include six children and their spouses: Linda Benson, Michelle and Dave McCord, Steven and Ellen Benson, Donnine and Felix Pantoja, Blake Benson, and Brian and Sisi Benson; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Juanita Thompson; a brother, Charles Wayne and Kaye Rice; aunt, Lawanda and Robert Majors; an uncle, Victor and June Rice.
