EVELYN ESTELLE POOLE AKINS

Evelyn Estelle Poole Akins was born to the late Samson and Julia Poole on July 28, 1913. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 17, 2010.

Evelyn was educated in the Volusia County Public School system and eventually relocated to the state of New York at an early age to pursue her dreams. She eventually returned to the Volusia County area and was united in holy matrimony to James Lewis Akins on April 24, 1973. They were happily married for almost 20 years until James preceded her in death in July of 1990. She lived in their DeLand home for another 20 years until her health prompted relocation to the Alliance Center for Healthcare. Evelyn was a dedicated member of the American Legion Auxiliary of DeLand for 24 years. There she met her special lifetime friend, Marguerite. Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church of DeLand upon her return to Volusia County. She was an energetic, vibrant Christian with an amazing memory.

She leaves to cherish her memories seven stepchildren: Frances Graves (Pinky) of Raleigh, NC, James L. Akins Jr. (Patricia) of Ada, MI, Rev. Barbara Akins-Yancey (Esco) of Danville, VA, Queen Akins Caviness (Michael) of Garner, NC, George O. Akins (Katrina) of Raleigh, NC, Gloria A. Akins of Raleigh, NC, and Wanda Akins, also of Raleigh. From these she leaves fourteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other sorrowing friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 Noon Saturday, April 24, 2010 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 West Wisconsin Avenue, DeLand, Father Don Lyons, celebrant. Visitation hours will be held today (Friday) from 4pm to 7pm at Arthur Mack Funeral Home, Inc. Burial will follow the services at Union Cemetery, DeLand.

Condolences may be sent to the family at [email protected]. Arrangements entrusted to the care of the Cusack Family at Arthur Mack Funeral Home, Inc.
