MILTON-FREEWATER -- Mrs. George (Ina H.) Phillips of 108 SE 16th St. died at a Walla Walla hospital Tuesday night. She had been there five days. Her father, James Ashworth, went to Walla Walla, in 1864. He married Ida Story a member of a pioneer family of this area. Mrs. Phillips was born July 30, 1885, on Dry Creek, near Milton-Freewater. She is survived by her twin sister, Ida. It was hard to separate the 80-year-old twin sisters, who have spent their lives in this area.
Even their married names are the same -- Phillips. Ina married George Phillips in September of 1903. Within the year Ida married George's brother, Fred. At the annual Northwest twins conventions at Walla Walla, they repeatedly have won the award for "most alike twins over 40."
The Phillips' had an orchestra for many years and played at dances in the area.
Besides her husband, at the home, and her twin sister, of Milton-Freewater, she is survived by two other sisters, Mrs. Olive McLean and Mrs. May Staggs, both of Milton-Freewater; one brother, William J. Ashworth of Portland; a foster-son, Dick Hayes of Milton-Freewater. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mundselle-Rhodes chapel witht he Rev. George Knox of the First Christian Church officiating. Vault interment will be in the Weston Cemetery. Friends who wish may call at the Munselle-Rhodes chapel until 1 p.m.. Thursday. The casket will not be opened after the service.
