L. DeWayne Akin 67, of Carmel, IN, a kind, sincere, devoted man passed away on April 17, 2010, after a short courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Bedford, IN on June 26, 1942, to the late Lowell and Marie (Johnson) Akin. DeWayne received his Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate degrees at Indiana State University. He married the love of his life Linda (Buchanan) Akin on June 25, 1966, and she survives him. Mr. Akin was a school principal for Carmel Clay Schools from 1978 until his retirement from Woodbrook Elementary School in 2009. He was previously a teacher in Lowell, IN and a principal in Plainfield and Danville, IN. He also worked for 20 years at Market Square Arena as a supervisor. DeWayne started coaching at the Boys Club and credited them with beginning his career path by providing him a scholarship to attend college. He was a coach for the Carmel High School girl's soccer team amassing thirteen state championships. DeWayne also loved coaching young kids including his children and grandchildren. Mr. Akin was an avid gardener and his pride was his backyard. He also spent his summer fishing at Pelican Lake in Minnesota. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Linda, their daughter Julie and husband John Faas, and son Rick and wife Noelle Akin. He was a proud grandfather of Jonathan, Justin and Jamie Faas, Izabelle and Clark Akin. He was the son-in-law of Virgie and Woody Mull.
