Rutherford Hayes King was born on 16 Jun 1879, in La Sueur County, MN, son of George and Mary McLean King. He went by Rufus or Rufe. He came to Frazee in 1899 and married Charlotte "Lottie" Kohler on 12 Feb 1900.

Rufe worked at many different jobs during his life. He worked for his father-in-law, John Kohler Jr., for several years in the family's dredging business, living in many different parts of the upper midwest. He also played a significant role in the acquisition of the Giant Grip Horse Shoe Company in the early 1900's for his father-in-law. He ghost purchased the Giant Grip's factory in Little Falls for John Kohler allowing John to gain full control of the manufacturing business.

Eventually Rufe and his family settled in Frazee where Rufe worked in farming raising small grains, cattle, corn and hay. Later he worked as a creamery deliveryman and wood hauler.

Rufe and Lottie had four children, John, Ralph, Mary (Mae), and Blanche. He passed way on 19 Feb 1958 in Frazee and is interred at Lakeside Cemetery in Frazee, Minnesota.
