Well Known Pioneer Resident of Centerville Dies at 98

Mary Alice Klum, who would have been 98 years of age on July 29 of this year, died at the St. Joseph Hospital Tuesday, June 9 at 2:05 p.m.
Born in the year that the Civil War began, Mrs. Klum was one of the oldest residents of the county. She was widely known, and at different times had furnished information for this paper from her fund of pioneer memories.
Mary Alice Klum was born in Sharpsville, Ind., July 29, 1861, the daughter of Douglas and Sarah Spaulding. On Nov. 3, 1878, she united in marriage with J.N. Klum, and to this union were born seven children, five sons and two daughters, of whom two sons and one daughter are living. They are Dick, of Los Angeles, Robert, of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Fannie McCoy, of Centerville.
There are 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Klum also has one sister, Mrs. W.C. McCarney of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and she is now 93 years of age.
Mr. and Mrs. Klum moved from Centerville to Shenandoah in 1902, where they lived until September 1942, when they returned to Centerville.
The late Henry Klum, a son and co-founder of the O.K. Furniture Co. of this city, often quoted his mother relative to old time happenings and these reports often got into print locally..
Mrs. Klum was taken to the St. Joseph hospital on Sunday, May 31. She will lie in state at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home until 9 a.m. Thursday, June 11. There will be a short service at that time. Her body will be taken to Shenandoah for burial at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
