Jacob Granville was the son of Dr. Solomon and Carolyn "Waller" Mordecai. He married Anna Perine Tuthill, daughter of George Augustus and Phoebe Ann "Perine" Tuthill, on 24 Apr 1867. They became the parents of three daughters, Armentine Granville (Sadler), Libbie Adele, who died as an infant, and Ellen Jacqueline (Garrett).
He served in the 3rd Alabama Volunteer Infantry, Company A, Mobile Cadets in the Civil War with the rank of Captain. Jacob Granville was named for his grandfather, Jacob Mordecai, an highly respected Jewish educator who ran a girls school for several years in Warrenton, NC.
After the Civil War, Jacob became a cotton weigher/cotton factor until his untimely death at the age of 31. He died from bronchitis at the residence of his father-in-law, George Tuthill.
