Joseph was the first of three sons born to Joseph Joshua Decker and his wife Blanche McCauseland. He married Hermie Emily West and they had three children: Damon Paul; Phillip Joel; Jan Delise. They divorced sometime before June 1969. At the time of his death he was living in Hobbs, New Mexico.
