Melvin Eugene Ackerman was born to Melvin Theodore Ackerman and Maxine Marie Lovegrove Ackerman on June 17,1949, at Geneva. He passed away on November 20,1992 at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 43 years, 5 months, and 4 days. He was the only child in the family.

Gene, as he was called by family and friends, graduated from Fairmont High School in 1967, and then attended Milford Technical School in Milford.

In 1969, he moved to Scottsbluff, where he was employed at Lockwood Corp. until 1975 when he moved to Riverton, WY. Gene was employed by Riverton Redi-Mix, and in 1977 went to work for Gilpatric Construction.

In 1982, he returned to Fairmont and in 1984 went to work for Biba Construction where he was employed as a loader operator at the time of his death.

Gene was married to Alana Gayle Philson of York on November 15, 1969, and to them three children were born.

Gene's leisure hours were spent in playing with his children and many hours were spent playing Nintendo. He enjoyed watching football and tinkering with old cars and remodeling his home. Gene loved to bowl and was serving as secretary for the bowling league at the time of his death. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a volunteer with the Boy Scouts.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He is survived by his wife, Alana; daughter Heather Lynne Ackerman-Brown, sons, Jason Phillip, and Korey Eugene. His parents Mel and Maxine Ackerman, and by his grandson Joshua Brown.

Funeral services were conducted from the Fairmont Community Church in Fairmont at 2 p.m. Monday, November 23, 1992, with the Rev. Tony Woodward officiating. Nancy Jo Galusha accompanied Gregory L. Rehm who sang "Wind Beneath My Wings." A special taped musical selection was "I Thought He Walked on Water."

Those serving as casket bearers were Richard Arburck, Paul Fox, Larry Neiman, Glenn Reiling, Wayne Stone and Delos Warriner.

Interment was in the Fairmont Public Cemetery.
