MRS. ABBOTT, 22, IS FIRST 1969 FATALITY
DIED TUESDAY OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN 1 CAR CRASH
Mrs. Danny D. Abbott, 22, Route 2, Red Oak, died at Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Council Bluffs, Tuesday night, July 15, of injuries received in a 1 car accident at 6:10 p.m. last Friday on US 71 but a half mile south of Tenville. Her death was the first fatality in Montgomery County.
According to the report of Highway Patrolman Robert D. Evans, Red Oak, the car owned by an Atlantic firm, was driven by Mrs. Abbott's husband, 23, and was northbound on 71 when it went out of control and into the ditch, injuring all five occupants.
Mrs. Abbott had head and internal injuries.
Her husband, who was released from Murphy Memorial Hospital here Monday, had back and head lacerations.
He entered guilty pleas in Earl R. Dixon'a Justice of Peace Court here Monday to two separate charges and was fined $50 on each charge. One charge was speeding, filed by Patrolman Evans as a result of the accident and the other charge was reckless driving, filed by a private citizen, David R. England, 1205 Miller Avenue, Red Oak, who according to Patrolman Evans had observed Abbott driving in a reckless manner in Red Oak about 20 minutes prior to the accident.
In lieu of paying the fine, Abbott chose to spent 15 days in the Montgomery County Jail on each charge, with the sentences running consecutively and to be served when he is more fully recovered from his injuries. In the meantime, he was released under bond of $125.
The other occupants of the car were Bill Wagner, 17, Atlantic, who was released from Murphy Memorial Hospital Monday after treatment for back injuries; Dennis Lasley, 20, Rout 2, Red Oak, fractured shoulder and bruises; Michael Davis, 21, 102 Valley Street, bruises. Davis and Lasley were treated as outpatients at Murphy Memorial and then released.
Two Villisca ambulances wee used to transport the injured to the hospital.
Damage to the car was estimated at $2,000.
Funeral services for Mrs. Abbott will be held Friday, July 18, at 10 a.m. at Nelson Chapel with Rev. Orval Roach officiating and burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Patricia Jean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Wells Sr., was born October 29, 1946, at Carroll, Iowa and had been a Red Oak resident since 1938. She attended school here and was married in 1967 at Atlantic, Iowa to Danny D. Abbott, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Denine Lorae Goodwin and Deanna Lynn Abbott, both at home.; two sons, Richard Dean Goodwin, and Jeffery Alan Goodwin, both at home; mother, Mrs. Ardith Core, Red Oak; father, Dallas Wells Der, Red Oak; sister, Betty Wells, Red Oak; brother, Dallas Wells Jr., Red Oak.
Mrs. Abbott was a member of the First Baptist Church.
