W. O. EVANS - VETERAN SCHOOL TEACHER PASSES

William Columbus Evans, veteran teacher and Shelby County citizen, was born on May 8, 1871 near Wilsonville. He was educated in the schools of Shelby County, later doing speacial work in University of Alabama. He taught for 52 yeas and with the exception of a few years service in Bibb and Chilton, he devoted his life of service to his native Countians.

In 1942, due to ill health Mr. Evans gave up his work and was the first Shelby County teacher to recieve the benefits of the Retirement Act passed by the last Legislature. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a loyal Mason.

Mr. Evans passed away in Montevallo on Febuary 24 and funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Costy of Siluria Methodist Church. Pall bearers included: Fred Allen, Calera; R. F. Ray, Helena; Sam Atkins, Mayberry; J. B. King, Dogwood; D. B. Smith; Chelsea; and Woodrow Elliott, Wilsonville.

Superintendent of Education, J. L. Appleton, and the Shelby County Board of Education were Honorary Pall Bearers.

Serviving Mt. Evans are his widow Emma Williams Evans, five daughters, Mrs. O. T. Lawley, Marvel; Mrs. George Walker, Siluria; Mrs. Mabel Lawley, Birmingham; Mrs. R. C. Yaw, Tuscaloosa; Ms. C. O. Lambeth, Bessemer; and one son, Fred Evans, of Bessemer.

In the passing of Mr. Evans, Shelby County has lost a useful, and the teaching profession, a loyal worker and friend.
