John Thomas "Scooter" Armitage III, 58 of Jasper, Texas, peacefully passed from this life and went home to be with his heavenly Father on April 17, 2010.

John was born July 30, 1951, in Houston, Texas. After attending Houston Baptist College, he began a career in banking which spanned 35 years. John moved to Jasper in 1979 where he became an avid trot line fisherman. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and became a lifelong Jasper Bulldog fan, volunteering numerous hours with the "chain gang" at Jasper football games over the past 20 years. John attended every Jasper football game, home and away, for 21 years until he suffered a heart attack in 2001. He was also a great fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the University of Texas Longhorns.

John was a family man who loved and supported his wife and children. He was a "people person" and his booming laugh frequently signaled some practical joke on a friend or co-worker. John also loved gardening and flowers, spending numerous hours planting and tending his yard. John was a cancer survivor and enjoyed celebrating at the Relay for Life and encouraging others.

John is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carolyn Sue Shaw Armitage. He is also survived by his parents, John Jr. and Joy Armitage of Jasper, Texas. Other survivors include his three children, John T. Armitage IV and wife Angela of New Caney Texas, Shannon Ashley Armitage Elam and husband David of Richmond, Texas, and Andrew Alan Armitage and wife Rachel of Beaumont; grandchildren, Jenna Armitage and Matthew Elam; one brother, Kyle Armitage and wife Sheila; nieces, Kayla and Summer Armitage; Uncle Royce Callicotte and wife Rose; and his mother-in-law Doris Shaw. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law C. F. Shaw, Jr.
