Ira Ellis Porter was born at Kimbolten, Ohio, on December 24, 1883, and at the age of 12 he moved with his family to San Angelo, Texas, where he grew to manhood.

On December 29, 1911, at Mangum, Oklahoma, he was united in marriage with Allie Sears. They moved to Kirwin, Kansas, in January 1912 and have made their home there for nearly 47 years. They were the parents of four children. The oldest daughter, Margaret, passed away at the age of seven in 1921.

The other children left to mourn his leaving are their son, Charles and wife Elenora and daughters, Mary Beth and Janie who lived in Austin, Texas; daughter, Dorothy and husband Dexter McKelvy and daughters, Linda Diane and Randi who live in Mill Valley, California; daughter Carol and husband Lynn Stockman and daughters Melanie and Barbara Ann who live in Fort Worth, Texas. Ira also has five sisters and four brothers living in Texas and Missouri.

Ira has been an active member of the Kirwin Methodist Church for many years and for the past two years was custodian of the church—a job he loved. He was a member of the Kirwin Odd Fellows Lodge and Ruth Rebekah Lodge of Kirwin.

The Porters had sold their properties in Kirwin and Phillipsburg and on December 10, 1958, had started to Mill Valley, California, to make their home. Destiny ruled differently though for at 2:45 p.m. December 15 the Porters were involved in a car-truck collision about ten miles from Tracy, California. They were taken to a hospital in Tracy and the doctors found that Ira had suffered critical chest and head injuries. He passed away at 2:15 a.m. December 16, 1958.

Ira was a man who loved people, and all who knew him loved him. He was not a man who built towers but loved children and they loved him and called him by his first name, and the growing earth responded to his touch.

Funeral services were conducted in the Chapel of the Russell Gooch Funeral Home in Mill Valley by Chaplain Louie White from Fort Mason, California, with the Mount Tamalpia I.O.O.F. Lodge in charge.

Burial was in the Kirwin Cemetery.
