Robert was the youngest son of Alanson Peck Hammond and Emma J. Black. On June 24, 1908, Robert married Sarah Virginia Reid. Together they had three children. For many years, Robert was the manager of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company, he was a master of the Masonic lodge, a member of the Elks lodge for 33 years, a patron of the Eastern Star, president of the Kiwanis club and a member of the city council for seven years. At one time he served as vice-president of the League of Oregon Cities. He was also an active golfer and member of the country club and raised saddle horses on his ranch in Fern valley.
