Mary lived her life as a caretaker. She was born seven years after the last child of the family when her mother was 46. Her mother reportedly said that although she did not want another child, she was glad that Mary came along. Mary first cared for her mother, Rachel Baxter Crain, who died in 1932 aged 92. Mary was then a homemaker for her two bachelor brothers, Harry, until he married in 1925, Frank, until he died in 1952 of cancer. Then she and widowed brother, Morry, lived together in Augusta, Illinois, until he died in 1964 at 101. Mary died in Augusta, Illinois, in 1990 aged 103.
