COUNTY'S OLDEST RESIDENT DEAD~ AUNT HATTIE AYRES FUNERAL THURSDAY
Carroll County's oldest resident, Hattie Ayres, passed away at 12:40 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Kennedy Nursing Home in Flora, Indiana where she had been a patient for several days. She would have been 102 years of age in December of this year.
Until the past few weeks she was well and active, but several weeks ago she fell and suffered injuries about her face and head. Although the accident in itself was not serious and she recovered from the lacerations, her advanced age and other failings of more than a century of living took their toll.
Although she had been confined to a wheelchair for many, many months, she had continued well and on the occasion of her 100th birthday was honored at appropriate services at the Bringhurst Methodist Church.
Until the past few years, Mrs. Ayres had been making a trip each year to the state of Oklahoma to spend some time with her sister, Mrs. Orra Abbott who is 91 years of age.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Bringhurst Methodist Church of which she had been a member for approximately 75 years, with the Reverend A. A. Schenck, pastor, officiating. Burial will be made in the Asbury Cemetery.
Born December 22, 1850 on a farm east of Cutler, Indiana, she was the daughter of Samuel and Maranda Thomas.
In 1881, she was married to William Nelson Shanklin (51234753), who passed away in 1884. They had two children: Carl Shanklin, formerly of North Bend, Washington, now deceased; and Emma Holman of Miami, Oklahoma. Following Mr. Shanklin's death, she was wed to Robert G. Ayres. They had two children: Forest Ayres, with whom she made her home the past 39 years and Arthur Ayres of Flora, Indiana.
There are six grandchildren and eight grandchildren.
