Jacob fought in the Civil War. He was a private with Company E, 15 Regiment Ohio Infantry. Enlistment date: 20 Sep 1861. Discharge: 25 Feb 1863. Quartermaster Sergeant-Company F, 9 Regiment Ohio Calvary. Enlist: 06 Apr 1863. Discharge: 20 Jul 1865. GAR Post #91 Robbins.

Jacob was one of five children born to Amos Pugh and Barbara Elizabeth Barger Gatchell. He had 13 half siblings after his father remarried to Mary Ream.

Jacob served Ohio in the Civil, first being a member of Co. F, 55th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then, having gotten tired of marching everywhere, he joined the Ohio 9th Cavalry. He escaped the war without being seriously wounded.

Jacob married Miss Elizabeth Spoon, daughter of Robert and Martha Spoon in 1869. They had two sons, Alvin K. and Harry Gatchell. Sadly, Jacob's wife died on 8 March 1873, and he never remarried.

Jacob held several different types of jobs over the years; prison guard, laborer, stock dealer. A few years after his wife's death, Jacob went to live with his widowed sister, Rebecca Gatchell Dumm. They lived together many years, until Jacob's death in 1921 at the age of 82 after a long illness.
