Although there were many Bakers in the area of New Brunswick during this period, this researcher has been unable to link Samuel to any of them. None of the prominent Baker's in New Jersey were known to practice the silversmith trade. Of the right age to be his father is noted silversmith Eleazer Baker of Ashord, CT (1764-1848) but none of his known children were named Samuel; and none were known to have come to New Jersey.
He was also a contemporary (and possibly related?) to three silversmith of New England, all unrelated and named Baker, and all of whom apprenticed with the famous Jabez Baldwin (1778-1819) of Salem, MA. There was Stephens Baker (ca. 1787-1856) s/o Joseph Baker & Lucy Stephens/Stevens who operated a gunsmith & silvermsith business in Wilmington, NC until 1818 and then returned to NYC where he operated as S. Baker & Son, and died in his hometown of Beverly, MA. There was a George Baker (1790-1878) s/o Asa Baker & Hannah Newhall of Ipswich, MA who was a silversmith in Providence, RI and Salem, MA; and Thomas Baker (1793-1820) s/o s/o Thomas Baker & Mary Choate of Ipswich who briefly partnered with Jabez Baldwin 1817-1819, before removing to Concord, NH where he continued his business.
It is known this Samuel Baker married around 1810 to an unknown woman (Elizabeth), and the couple resided in Elizbeth, Union County, having at least 11 known children:
* William Baker (1808-1808)
* Catherine Baker (1809-1810)
* Jane L. Baker (1811-1874)
* Eliza Baker (ca. 1811)
* Catherine Ann Baker (1811-1889)
* William S. Baker (1814-1858)
* Elias Baker (1815-1871)
* John D. Baker (ca. 1817)
* Alexander Baker 1818-1875)
* Jane Elizabeth Baker(1823-1901)
* Samuel L. Baker (ca. 1826).
He is calculated his wife died sometime between 1826-1828, for it was on October 28, 1828 the 42-year old widower married 32-year old spinster, Elizabeth FitzRandolph, daughter of Lewis FitzRandolph of New Brunswick. Upon their marriage Elizabeth became stepmother to his 4 children, then aged 2 to 17.
The couple would become parents to 4 known children (all sons:
* Samuel Snowden Baker (ca. 1830)
* David E. Baker (1831-1831)
* James Fitz Randolph Baker (ca. 1832-1849)
* Lewis Frederick Baker (1834-1861)
Samuel Baker died in 1858 at about age 72. His bride of 30 years survived him another 13 years, passing in 1872 at age 80.
