R. M. Powell - R. [obert] M. [assie] Powell was born in New Hampshire County, Va., June 2nd, 1836. When he was about one year old his parents [Horatio Nelson Powell and Elizabeth Ely] moved to Illinois where he resided until 1873.
February 20, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth J.[ane] Chiles and to them were born four children, viz B. E. and C. H., residing at Conway; C. D. at Loveland, Colorado and Mrs. P. [erley] A. [rthur] Blake [Hollie], of Bedford. In 1875 Mr. Powell came to Taylor County, Iowa, and has resided here until his death, which occurred suddenly at his home in Bedford Saturday Nov. 6th at 4:30 p. m.
There were eleven children in his father’s family, six of whom preceded him in death and one brother and three sisters remain.
His wife, three sons and one daughter survive him and today are bowed beneath their sorrow which none of us escape and yet never loses its poignancy though the scene of death may grow familiar and men are kept busy digging our graves.
Mr. Powell was a man of sterling integrity and worth, whom men respected and loved, and the community was greatly shocked when the news of his sudden death became known.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Fred N. Willis and after brief services at the home the remains were taken to Conway, where neighbors and friends crowded the church to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed and after the service there the burial was in the Conway cemetery.
The pallbearers were R. W. Robinson, D. Roberts, J. E. DeHaven, J. R. Cooper, John Dotts, W. D. Blakemore.
