He was a member of the Frankton Christian Church, the Madison County Farm Bureau and a former member of both the Alexandria Lions Club and the Frankton Lions Club. Don has raised and raced standardbred horses for several years. He was a member of the United States Trotting Association (USTA) and the Indiana Standardbred Association (ISA).
