In 1820 Charles was living in Grayson Co., KY with his parents; 13 people in the household on the census. On October 24, 1830 Charles purchased 80 acres of land in what is now Harristown Township, Macon Co., IL. He was a farmer and supervisor of his road district. On December 2, 1835, he purchased another tract south of the first tract, across the section line from Gouge Cemetery. In 1840 he was residing with his wife and 5 children in Macon Co., IL. In 1850 he was residing in Macon Co., IL with his father, 5 of his children and 2 grandchildren. On September 3, 1853, he deeded part of the first section of land purchased to his son William. On October 28, 1857, he again deeded some of this same section to James P. Law at which time he was living in Pike Co., IL where he had purchased land. By August 25, 1860, he was again residing in Macon Co., IL with his son William, William's wife Eliza and their children; Nancy, James and Seth. In 1865, the children of Charles Hanks were giving to each other quit claim deeds to land near Decatur and some in Pike County.
