Ferne Phillips Rowland, 76, Bridgewater, died Saturday, Feb 26, 2000, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg following an illness of two years.

Mrs. Rowland was born Aug 11, 1923, near Waynesboro, and was a daughter of the late Victor and Mary Kagey Phillips.

She graduated from New Hope High School in 1941 and Bridgewater College in 1944. She attended Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill. She taught American history and goverment at New Hope School and Wilson Memorial High School in Augusta County. She also taught at Annville-Cleeona High School in Annville, Pa.

Mrs. Rowland was active in the Church of the Brethren as a pastor's wife, youth teather and adviser. She served as moderator of Middle Pennsylvania District in 1987 and as Camp Borad chairwoman of Middle
District, and was delagate to district and annual conferances of the Church of the Brethren. She was a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren, where she sang in the Sanctus Choir.

One June 27, 1948, she married the Rev. Earl D. Rowland, who survives.

Also surviving are three sons, Philip Powland, St. Louis, Mo., Dennis Rowland, Fallbrook, Calif., and Curtis Rowland, Fairfield, Pa.; a brother, Harper Pillips, Waynesboro; a sister, Mary Alice Womble, Bridgewater; and four grandsons.

The Revs. Robert E. Alley and Randell Yoder will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Theological Seminary Scholarship Fund, 515 W. National Road, Richmond, Ind.

Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Services in Bridgewater.
