WEEDMAN, John W Veteran Santa Anna Jan 25, 1864 Serg't. Died Oct 12, 1864 at Andersonville. Gr. 10,785. Weedman, John W. - Union. Enlisted in DeWitt Co., IL 4 Sept 1861 in Co. I, 39th Illinois Infantry as a Private. Was living in Santa Anna, IL at the time of enlistment. He re-enlisted 1 Jan. 1864. He was takin prisoner May 16 1864 at Drurys Bluff Va. and died 12 October 1864 at Andersonville (GA) Prison. He is buried there in grave number 10785. He was a Corporal at the time of his death. Some DeWitt Co. histories state he died of starvation at Andersonville but records there indicate he died of scorbutus [Scorbutus is an old word for scurvy which is a condition caused by lack of vitamin C in the diet. Symptoms include general weakness, anemia, gum disease and skin hemorrhages]. Son of Asa and Delilah (Hand) Weedman.
