He enlisted there April 22, 1851, as a private soldier against the Rebellion in Co. K, 14th Reg't, Ind. Vols., and re-enlisted February 15, 1864, in Co. C, Fourth U. S. Artillery, for another three-years' service. He participated in numerous skirmishes and battles under Generals Philip H. Sheridan and James H. Wilson including those of Winchester and Spotsylvania and was present at the surrender of Gen. Robert
E. Lee's army. He was honorably discharged at Ft. Whipple, Va., February 15, 1867. He was married in Bloomington, Indiana, October 3, 1872, to Eunice R. Worley by Rev. B. F. Treat, "Christian." He is a fireman; post office Bloomington, Indiana.

Children: (1) Harriet, b. July 2, 1874, in Bloomington, Monroe Co., Ind.; (2) Grace, b. in Bloomington, Monroe County, Ind., August 10, 1877; and (3) Ralph, b. August 31, 1880, in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana.
