MARTIN - Melvin Smith, 68, of Martin, died Friday, October 24, 1997, at Methodist Hospital in Dyersburg.

Services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Gardner Church of Christ, where he was a member, with Bro. Larry Powers officiating. Burial was in Gardner Cemetery with Murphy Funeral Home of Martin in charge of arrangements.

Herman Smith, Bo Smith, Mike Barber, Mark Brewer, David Thomas Smith, Donnie Brewer and Allen Gatewood served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were David Gingras, Steve Ellevan and Mike Ellevan.

Mr. Smith was born May 29, 1929, in Martin, son of the late Herman and Mamie Lovelace Smith. He was a graduate of Martin High School and a U. S. Navy veteran.

Her formerly owned and operated Smith Service Station with his brother, Thomas Smith, and was later employed by Weakley County Board of Education, assigned to Martin Primary School and bus driver.

Survivors, in addition to his brother, include his wife, Mrs. Gloria Gatewood Smith; a daughter, Mrs. Paula Hauhe; two other brothers, Paul Smith and Joe Smith; two sisters, Mrs. Dollie Brewer and a twin sister, Mrs. Mildred Barber; and two grandchildren, Robin-Paige Hauhe and Christin D'Anne Hauhe, all of Martin.
