Donald Bryan Dunning, affectionately known as DD to his relatives, passed away at his home on Aug. 30, 2003 after a long illness.
Don was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho on May 28, 1928 to lifelong residents Bryan and Leona Dunning. He was the grandson of William F. Dunning, who homesteaded the area in 1903 and served as sheriff from 1917 to 1924. Don graduated from Bonners Ferry High School and joined the United States Navy in 1948. He served for two years.
On Oct. 1, 1948, Don married Jean Ling. They lived in Bonners until 1958, where four of their five children were born. Family and friends joined them in celebrating their 50th anniversary in 1998. Don was a member of the Eagle lodge in Tacoma, Wash., and of the Moose lodge in Yelm, Wash. About 1977 they returned to Bonners Ferry.
Don was a member of the Knights of Pythias in Bonners. He served the local chapter as secretary and grand chancellor. He held the offices of vice chancellor for the State of Idaho.
Don was an active member of the local American Legion post. He was sergeant-at-arms, vice commander and commander. He was a perennial member of the firing squad for military funerals and the color guard for parades.
He loved to fish, hunt, play cards and pool, tell jokes and stories. Don was proud to be a bus driver for the Boundary County School District from 1991 to 2000. He always treated the students to ice cream to celebrate the last day of school. He retired due to ill health, but enjoyed joining his buddies for coffee at the Senior Center and Mugsy's.
