Janet Elizabeth Pearlstein Erbe, 75
Died: March 29, 2010, in Youngsville, LA
after a lengthy illness. During the past year, Janet amazed her family as well as her doctors and nurses with her resilience and fortitude. Her inner resources long outlasted her physical ones but she never gave up and enjoyed life's simple pleasures until the end. Janet's family would like to express heartfelt thanks to all of her caregivers, especially the wonderful staff of the LTAC of Acadiana, for their tender care and constant support throughout her stay there.

Janet was born in Barre, Vt. on Feb. 3, 1935, to Vere and Helene Pearlstein. After graduation from high school, she enrolled at the University of Vermont where she met her future husband, Lawrence Wayne Erbe. In 1955, after their marriage, the newlyweds moved to Austin, TX. where her husband pursued his doctorate in biology at the University of Texas. Their first three children, Alexander, Alice, and Bonnie were born in Austin. After receiving his doctorate, Larry was hired at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now UL) and the young family moved to Lafayette. With the birth of Laurie and Andrew, the family was complete. Janet went on to combine motherhood with scholarship and graduated from USL with a degree in political science. In due course, she earned two masters' degrees and then worked for the State of Mississippi as a therapist. After retiring due to health reasons, she returned home to the Lafayette area and settled in Crowley, La. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Crowley and formed many lasting bonds, including an enduring friendship with her treasured friend, Betty Saunders, who was a comforting and supportive friend to the very end of Janet's illness.

Jan will be sorely missed by her five children and their spouses, Alex and Annie Erbe of Hilo, Hawaii; Alice Erbe of Monroe, La.; Bonnie & Patrick Baker of Austin, Texas; Laurie & Burton Thibodeaux of Spring, TX; and Andrew & Danielle Erbe of Lafayette, La. She is also mourned by her grandchildren of whom she was very proud: Samuel & Piilani Erbe, Jennifer & Tom Inouye, Benjamin and Rachel Erbe, Jesse Baker, Julie and Kyle Ferguson, Thomas Baker, Katie Baker, Rhea Thibodeaux, Tori Thibodeaux, Haden Erbe, Emma Erbe, Ian Erbe and Ella Erbe. Her four great-grandchildren, Halle Inouye, Maia Inouye, Emma Erbe, and Ambyr-Cecily Inouye, were a great source of joy. Janet is survived by her siblings; Margaret Pearlstein, George Pearlstein, Emily (and husband Jega) Arulpragassam, and Richard (and wife Deanna) Pearlstein, as well as two nephews, one niece, and three great-nieces.

A celebration of Janet's life will be held on April 17 at the Trinity Episcopal Church of Crowley at 11 a.m. Visitation with the family will precede the service from 9-11 a.m. Commitment will follow at Abshire Cemetery
