Lewis left Bergen, Norway on May 22, 1870 and arrived in Quebec, Canada on July 10, 1870. He was the first of many descendants of his parents to immigrate to America. There were 2 of his mother's brothers - Thomas M Newton and Charles M Newton living by Grinnell, Iowa - this could be where he went first because on April 14, 1877 he was married to Carrie Thompson at Grinnell, Iowa.
Shortly after they were married Lewis and Carrie moved to Cook Township, Sac County. Carrie passed away in 1883 and on October 01, 1885 at Clear Lake, Hamilton, Iowa he was married to Elizabeth Solberg. After Elizabeth passed on Lewis was married to Emma B Benson on January 19, 1894 at Schaller, Sac County, Iowa.
Seven of his brothers and sisters and many of his niece's and nephew's followed him to America. Most of them made either Poweshiek or Sac Counties their first stop on arrival in the USA.
