Herman was the son of George and Ellen Phillips Loomis of Wood County. Of medium height and slender, with blue eyes and brown hair, he grew up on his father's farm in Webster Township. Herman married Anna May Taylor from Bowling Green on April 17, 1901 in Bowling Green, Ohio , and they had five sons: Frederick Maxwell, George Isaac, Douglas Heath, Joseph Taylor, and Horace Oswald. They lost one son at less than a year, George Isaac, and one at twenty years, Douglas Heath. Herman was a farmer. He died of cancer at age 48 years 5 months and 7 days.
