RAMON A. BARRERA, M.D., 88, of Chicago, passed away April 12, 2010.

Beloved husband of Gloria, nee Rasco; loving father of Lourdes (John E.) Moore and Gloria (Kevin M.) O'Connor; cherished grandfather of Alyson, Matthew, Charles and John Moore and Bridgette, Gabrielle and Magdalena O'Connor; dear brother in law of the late Rafael Rasco.

Dr. Barrera graduated with honors in June 1938 with a Bachelor of Arts and Science from De La Salle in Vedado, Havana, Cuba.
One thousand students enrolled to study medicine at the University of Havana. Of the one hundred who graduated, Ramon was number thirteen.

He worked as a Student Intern and Medical Intern at the Calinto Garcia University Hospital. Through academic excellence, Ramon earned the position of Chief of Interns and Residents of Our Lady of Mercedes University Hospital.

He passed the exam to practice medicine in the US in New York City and worked as a Medical Intern at Booth Memorial Hospital, Queens, New York for one year before serving as a Medical Resident at Providence Hospital in Washington DC for one year.
Dr. Barrera passed the exam to practice medicine in Chicago, Illinois in 1962. He chose Illinois because US Citizenship was not a requirement.

In 1963, Ramon became a partner at Weber Medical Clinic in Olney, Illinois and practiced internal medicine and gastroenterology until his retirement in 1987.

Interment in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
