Mary Slayter, the daughter of Isaiah Slayter and Hannah Grubb, grew up about 25 miles from here in what was then Ouachita Parish. Her grandfather, Wilhelm Schlator, emigrated from Germany in the 1700's. Mary and Gordon were married on September 14, 1836 and lived the first sixteen years of their marriage in Union County, Arkansas. Thirteen children were born to them, but only seven survived to adulthood. A typhoid epidemic in 1843 took the lives of four children in just 32 days, and two others died within four more years.
