Gordon Brazzel was born in Georgia and was a descendant of the Reverend Robert Bracewell of the village of Bracewell in Yorkshire, England who immigrated to the Isle of Wight County in Virginia around 1650.

Gordon left Georgia in the late 1820's and came to Claiborne Parish, Louisiana with his family which included his widowed mother and at least three brothers.

On September 19, 1836 he married Mary Slayter, the daughter of Isaiah Slayter and Hannah Grubb. Her parents lived near Downsville in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana.

Gordon moved his family to Union County, Arkansas and 13 children were born to them over the next 16 years. The Brazzel family owned land and farmed it together.

About 1853, Gordon and Mary and their living 7 children moved back to Louisiana in Claiborne Parish. Gordon began acquiring nearly 2,000 acres of land which during the Civil War was referred to as a "plantation".

Mary Brazzel died on September 23, 1863. Her youngest child
was age 11 and her oldest daughter had returned home to live due to the death of her husband in the Civil War.

Caroline Guin married Gordon on August 4, 1864, and their marriage lasted 30 years. She had 8 children of which 5 survived to adulthood.

This brought the number of children of Gordon to 21 or 22 and his grandchildren to 85. He and his two wives and many of his descendants are buried in the Corinth Cemetery, May they all rest in peace.
