He worked on the family farm until he was called up for military duty and entered the United States Army. Following his hitch in the Army, he returned to farming on the family farm. In March of 1950 he was married to Verda Oldenburg in Sutton, Nebraska. He continued farming until 1960 when they moved to Utica, Nebraska, and Verle took a job as a security guard at the missile sites there. In 1962 they moved to Lincoln where he worked at Norden Laboratories as a technician.
Then in 1963 he began employment at the University of Nebraska maintenance department, a position which he held for 25 years.
On May 5, 1963, he transfered his church membership to Southview Christian Church in Lincoln. Near the end of his career with the university, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and his health continued to deteriorate up until the time of his death on Friday, February 2, 1996.
Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Verda; two sons, John and Glenn, both of Lincoln; brothers and sisters-in-law, Walster and Margaret Williams and Elmer and Gwen Williams, all of Nora; a sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Oliver Hertel of Anniston, Alabama; nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
