Came to Texas with his two brothers about 1834 and settled in the colony operated by the empresario Dr. Lorenzo Zavalla. Fought at the Battle of San Jacinto as a 1st Lieutenant. Member of the 1st & 2nd Congress of Texas, 1836-1838. In the 1850 census of Panola County, Tx James was listed as a Tanner.
