Dorothy W. Barnes, 109, died May 24, 2013, in Panama City, FL.

She was born April 27, 1904 near Uniontown AL. In high school there she won a Birmingham News scholarship to attend Alabama College, now the University of Montevallo. She graduated with honors in 1927. For 39 years she taught school, from seventh grade to junior college level mostly in the Mobile School District.

She married Jesse E. Barnes May 3, 1935, in Pascagoula, MS. They moved to Mobile, AL, in 1940. He died February 21, 1986.

She was an active member of Central Presbyterian Church in Mobile and taught Sunday school classes until she was 98. She lived alone from 1986 until age 102 and moved to Panama City in 2009. She played the piano, wrote poetry, and loved reading. She was intelligent, witty, soft-spoken, and the epitome of what a Southern lady should be.

Survivors include: sister, Sarah Case, Loma Linda, CA; son, Errol H. Barnes (Jean), Panama City; daughter, Carol D. Veal (Wilson), Quaker Hill, CT; 5 grandchildren: Sharrol Barnes Phillips MD, Brian Barnes JD; Cynthia Booth, Caren Gahagan, and Michael Veal; 8 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

The family expresses gratitude to the staff at Community Health and Rehabilitation Center, Panama City, for making her final years happy and comfortable.

A celebration of her life will be held in Quaker Hill on June 2. The graveside funeral service will be at Pine Crest Cemetery on Saturday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m.
