CARLETON - In Appleton, Minn., Aug, 24, 1881 of apoplexy, G. C. CARLETON, aged 38 years.
The deceased came to this town about eight years ago, where he resided until quite recently. He was for a tie telegraph operator at this place, and served one year as town treasurer. He was eminently honest, faithful in the discharge of every duty, a good citizen and king neighbor, and his family have met with a great loss in the death of the husband, and father, and will receive the warmest sympathy of friends in this time of affliction. Mr. Carleton;s remains were brought to this place for burial by the Masons and Odd Fellows, of which orders he was a member. His funeral was held from the Baptist church last Friday forenoon, Rev. Blakeslee assisting in the obsequies. The follow account of Mr. Carleton's death appears in the Appleton, Minn., Riverside Press:
Our people were startled on Wednesday morning by the announcement that our townsman, G. C. Carleton, was in a dying condition in his room on Broadway, from what appears to be a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Carleton had been quite active the day previous but complained of a severe pain in his head, and procured some medicine in hopes of finding relief, and retired at the usual hour. Some time during the night he was taken worse or received a Stroke of apoplexy, which rendered him unconscious. He was occupying a room alone in a vacant building and no person was aware of his condition until late the next morning, when his absence from business attracted the attention of a neighbor who repaired to his sleeping apartment and there, with his head hanging over his cote, breathing audibly, but in an unconscious condition, lay the stricken man. Quick as thought physicians were summoned, who, with the assistance of kind friends, did all that could be done to restore consciousness, but so long a time had elapsed since he was taken with the fit, that all efforts proved unavailing, and at about 12:30 death relieved him of what must have been great suffering, although unconscious to the last. His family were immediately informed of the result by telegraphy and they sent word to have his remains forwarded to them at River Falls, Wis. the deceased was a member of the Masonic order, and the lodge of this place took charge of the remains and prepared them for transportation, Mr, Lewis Tadeen accompanying the by Thursday morning's train, the lodge acting as escort to the depot.
Mr. Carleton came to Appleton in May last and opened a photograph gallery and had done a fair business considering the dull time of the year. He had just purchased a stereoscopic instrument which he was operating for nearly the first time the day previous to his death. It was his intention to remove his family to this place in a short time and was planning to make a home for them in our midst. His genial nature and upright manner had made him many friends in this community who feel with keen regret his sudden demise, and under such sad circumstances. He was about 38 years of age and leaves a wife and three children who have the sympathy of this entire community in their irreparable loss. 9-1-1881 River Falls Journal
