Vernon Wilson Arnold Sr., 94, of Winslow, passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at the Memorial Hospital in Jasper, IN. Vernon had recently been a resident of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Oakland City.

Vernon was born December 17, 1915, in North Platte, NE, to George and Emma Arnold. He married Stella Belle Rogge July 30, 1941, in Sundance, WY. After graduating in 1952 from University of Nebraska with a PhD in Chemistry, Vernon worked as a research chemist for Standard Oil in Whiting, IN and for Amoco of Naperville, IL. He was a loving family man who put his family first. He was an Army veteran, attended the Winslow Methodist Church, and worked with the Boy Scouts as a leader in Hammond, IN and Winslow, IN. Vernon enjoyed life and was noted for his keen wit and stories.

He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth A. (Skip) Sluder of Bloomington, IN; two sons, Vernon W Arnold Jr. of Winslow, IN, and Thomas J. (Sherry) Arnold of Petersburg, IN; five grandchildren, Kirk (Laura) Sluder, Elizabeth S. Sluder, Mackenzie Arnold, Pierce (Erin) Arnold and Craig Arnold; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Stella; a sister, Leona Rabi; and a brother, George Arnold. Funeral services were held April 3 at Curtis Funeral Home in Winslow with burial in the Sunset Cemetery in Winslow.
