Mr. Harris was born May 28, 1941, in Harrisonburg, and was the son of Carlotta Newman Harris and the late Austin St. Clair "Dick" Harris .
While attending Lucy Simms Elementary School, he designed the original turkey statues that guard the entrances to Rockingham County. He also attended Banneker Jr. High School and graduated from Roosevelt Sr. High School in Washington, D.C. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Howard University and participated in the ROTC program there. Later he received a Master's Degree from Syracuse University.
He formerly worked at Niagara Mohawk Power Company in Syracuse, N.Y.; Associated Utilities Company in New Jersey, and following his retirement he served as a utilities consultant.
As a child he was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg.
His body will be cremated at the Lindsey Cremation Chapel in Harrisonburg. Dr. Isaac Paul-Coker will conduct a memorial service 7 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home. Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Newtown Cemetery.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.
