DOUGLAS — Funeral services for Alfred J. Holley, 90, of Douglas will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2010 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Service with the committal service to follow in Sunnyside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
The Lord called Mr. Holley home to be with his beloved wife, Ruth C. Holley, Friday, April 9, 2010. They were married for 64 years before she preceded him in death in 2005.
He leaves behind two daughters, Jo Anne Mowry and her husband Lee of Roanoke, VA, and Faye Hennesy and Mike Brawner of Douglas; three grandchildren, Jeff Hennesy and his wife Kellye, Matt Hennesy and wife Lori, and Holley Carroll and husband Corey; four great-grandchildren, Madelyn Carroll, Mason Carroll, Jay Hennesy and Holley Ryan Hennesy; a sister, Mary Alice Moore of Clewiston, FL; a special niece and nephew, Jackie Yawn and Ronnie Yawn; and many other nieces and nephews.
Mr. Holley had been a resident of Cordele most of his life and moved to Douglas in 2006. He was born in Sumter County and was the son of the late John Thomas and Annie Clara Halstead Holley.
From 1942 until 1946 he served in the 464th Amphibious Truck Co., Transportation Corps of the United States Army as a technician fourth grade. After his stint in the military, most of his work career was with the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad where he delivered freight for 20 years and later worked as a conductor and brakeman on the train. He retired in 1982.
For many years he was active in the American Legion Post and the VFW in Cordele and served as a Boy Scout troop leader. Until he left Cordele, he was an active member of Cordele First United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Class.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Pre-School Program of Douglas First United Methodist Church, 311 Madison Avenue North, Douglas, GA 31533 or a charity of the donor's choice.
