Elkhart, Tex., March 25, 1889. This town and community is today lamenting over the death of John Hassell, one of our oldest and best physicians, who was taken with pneumonia about a week ago and died this morning. The doctor was 67 years old and has done good service as a physician here for the last fifteen or twenty years. He leaves a large family, all of which have the heart-felt sympathy of the entire community.

The 1880 Census of Anderson County Texas indicates Dr. Hassell was born in Illinois. His wife, Ellen A. was born in Indiana. Their children were all born in Texas.

Nancy Bundrick has learned that he was born in Crawford County, Illinois, the son of Zacheus Hassell and Phebe Parker Hassell. Phebe was the daughter of Elder John and Sarah "Sallie" White.

John Hassell applied for a Republic of Texas Land Grant, stating that he first came to Texas in 1840.

His first marriage was to Mary Jane Moore in 1843, Houston, Harris, Texas.

Mary Jane Moore Hassell died in 1860.

John's 2nd marriage was to Ellen A. Bryant in 1860.

Dora Genora b. 17 July 1871 m. Higginbotham, d. Jan 15, 1919

The 1910 census shows her living with her step-daughter, Mary Jane. Ellen died June, 1913, probably Johnson Co, Texas.
