Avis received her education in a rural Moody County grade school, near Colman, South Dakota, and was a graduate of Brookings High School in 1935. Following her education she lived on the family farm in Moody County and became the County Auditor from 1967 until 1979. Avis continued to live on the farm until moving to Brookings, South Dakota in 1983.
Avis was a member of Midway Lutheran Church, Church organist for many years, and was active in civic organizations, Sunday School, and other church activities. She enjoyed such hobbies as music and flowers.
