From Holland St. John - "Rebecca was the fifth child of William and Mary "Polly" Givens, settlers of southeastern Indiana in the early 1800s. A native of Indiana, she was born November 4, 1826 in Black Township, Posey County. When she was twenty years of age, she married John M. Bruce on November 19, 1846 in Posey County. The couple lived first in Black and Lynn Townships in Posey County, then moved to Gallatin County, Illinois which was just across the state border from Indiana. Their children were: William A., Martha America, James Robert, Mary Frances, John Beckenridge, Charles V., Clinton Altevera, and George Washington Bruce. Her husband John was a farmer. In 1870 he owned 40 acres of land, with four horses, nine cattle, 23 sheep and 90 hogs. Production from the prior year included 600 bushels of corn, 75 bushels of wheat, 60 bushels of Irish corn and ten bushels of sweet potatoes, 140 pounds of butter, 80 gallons of molasses and unidentified orchard produce. In an 1867 tax assessment, it was duly recorded that he owned one male dog. Rebecca died September 1, 1911 near Inman and was buried in the Oak Grove cemetery located in Cottonwood, Gallatin County, Illinois."
