‎ ‎ ‎ Thomas Levi (Hans) Baker, 70, formerly of Wayan, Idaho died Nov 28,1983 in Nampa Idaho after suffering from a long illness.
‎ ‎ ‎ Funeral services were held at the Allsip Funeral Home in Nampa. Burial was in the Nampa Cemetery.
‎ ‎ ‎ He was born Jan 10, 1913 in Murray, Utah to Arthur and Isabella Swallow Walker Baker. He was the second of five children. He moved with his family as a young boy to Star Valley, Wyoming where he grew up and attended various schools.
‎ ‎ ‎ In 1932 he met and married Emma Lois Herrick in Logan, Utah. They were the parents of eight children. He worked in various cheese factories in Star Valley, in Cache Valley (Smithfield Utah) and in Wayan, Idaho. For many years he worked for the Van Gas Company in Montpelier, while living in Paris, Idaho.
‎ ‎ ‎ He moved to Wayan in 1954 and managed the Grays Lake Cheese Factory until moving to Soda Springs and operating the Tom Thumb Drive-In. It was situated where "The Corner" is now located. In 1959 he moved with his family to Benson Ward near Logan, Utah working for Ed Gossner and the Cache Valley Dairy. Hans Baker was one of the best cheesemakers in the country (Star Valley, Wayan and Smithfield) and was well known for his swiss. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He moved back to Wayan in 1966 where he worked for the Grays Lake Wildlife Refuge and the Forest Service. He had also purchased the old cheese factory and rebuilt it into a home and a store. It was run for many years as "Baker's Service". Because of health reasons Hans and Lois moved to Nampa in 1977.
‎ ‎ ‎ He is survived by his wife Emma Lois Herrick Baker of Nampa, sons, Vic L. Baker of Inkom, Idaho; Tom E. Baker, of Houston Tex.; L Dee Baker of ElCajon, Calif.; daughters, Mrs Jack (Phyllis) Noffer; Mrs Douglas (Geneal) Dockstader, Mrs Michael (Sandra) Houseman of Wayan and Mrs. Michael (Cleone) Cabutti of Nampa, Idaho.
He had 25 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, brother, William Cecil Baker of Wayan, Idaho, sisters Mrs Delbert (Frances) Stroud of Leadore, Idaho
